[MUSIC] Michael Cullen - "True Believer"

Michael Cullen returns with a brand new album
for the public, True Believer. The Sydney, Australia
musician has made it a core value to create music
his own way. He’s done so with an extensive history
with some well-known bands out of Sydney in the
1990’s before taking the plunge. His last album,
Love Transmitter, garnered huge acclaim throughout
the country after its release in 2012. Despite some
medical issues, Cullen has managed to craft this
new album in the same manner as his last, and
the advancement can be seen within every song.
Cullen’s signature baritone is rife with harmony
that’s laced with gravel and wine. “Broken Horses”
is a stirring track denoting the heft of memories
past with the undercurrent of melancholy, but
it doesn’t drag you down. Cullen digs into a more
darker side on ‘I Walk Alone’, letting chords and
swirling keys encapsulate his vocals to better
depict his solo journey. ‘Black Coffee and Cigarettes’
is wistful, and just the kind of tune that goes well
with your diner cup of java or when you’re taking
in the sky. True Believer is a journal written in
rugged chords, and Michael Cullen has made it a
resillient one. The album is available now through
the artists’ Soundcloud page.

[MUSIC] The Great Escape

With fall settling in, there is a tendency to still
gravitate to music that will let you hold onto
your memories of sun and summer a biit longer.
You find that with the self-titled debut album
from Los Angeles, California trio The Great Escape.
The band possesses a sound that evokes a great dose
of what you’d expect in terms of alternative tunes
with enough of a pop edge that is almost like a
glint of sunlight through your car windshield
during a drive. The trio (Amie Miriello, Malte Hagemeister
and Kristian Nord) have had extensive experience
working with other groups in and around the
scene in L.A. and made the decision to work with
each other. The album shows just how well they
do, with Miriello proving to be a sharp presence
with her singing. With ‘I Just Can’t Help Myself’.
Miriello’s voice becomes a sultry banner declaring
her faults and praising a lover. Hagemeister on
the guitar is striding and confident, none more so
than on “I Want It All” where he manages to
frame things beautifully. Another standout track
by the trio is ‘Rebel’ which is rollicking and snaps
with just a bit of funk in the underlying beat to
get you in a revival spirit. There’s a real pointed
amount of abandon to be found throughout this
album by The Great Escape. Abandon that truly
validates their name and their sound. Check out
the entire album on their Soundcloud page.

[MUSIC] Manilow - 'Cease and Desist'

One could be thrown off by the name of this band hailing
from London, United Kingdom. Manilow however is decidedly
nothing like the smooth pop stylings of the singer who’s
first name is Barry. On the contrary, the trio of Dean Moston,
Paul Chamberlain and Gary Cardno come together to bring
forth a sound that’s anything but smooth with their EP,
Cease and Desist. The EP may be a compact four songs in
length, but every song has the cudgel-like weight fans of
punk music crave. Moston as lead vocalist does evoke the
traditional voice of punk, but with less of an edge and with
more emphasis on notes that prove to be rhythmically engaging.
Manilow overall doesn’t seek to actively declare themselves
a new voice in post-punk but the music does in varied ways.
The first track, ‘Law Here’, swings with sinewy guitars and
has a slight ska feel to it in spots. ‘Missing’ is hard-driving,
with lyrics that thrash and shred. ‘Control Issue’ is more of
a speedy track in style and length, being the shortest track
on the EP. ‘Vitamins’ is whimsy with a touch of barbed wire
to it, a kind of Saturday morning flow that gets your pulse
jumping. Manilow is striking a tone in alternative music that
will undoubtedly keep your interest. Cease and Desist is set
for release on October 10th.

[MUSIC] Alice Sungurov - 'So Blind'

Life with all of its complexities does contain one
bit of truth: sometimes there’s strands of joy that
just have to be appreciated. That’s the appeal to
be found in this single from a new singer/songwriter,
Alice Sungurov. Alice’s approach comes from an
earnest place - born to parents who emigrated from
Russia, she was unable to talk or understand anything
until she was 8 years old. Despite being diagnosed
with Auditory Processing Disorder, Alice rose above
with the help of her mother and other inspirational
figures. Now she’s released ‘So Blind’ for HitPlay Records,
and you hear and feel that vibrant energy she possesses.
‘So Blind’ has the bouncy sound one would find in a
song about teenage love, but Sungurov’s voice has
a bit of maturity that reminds you of Belinda Carlisle
in her early years. It’s a pop song that isn’t quite
bubblegum, and that suits you fine when you hear
it. Expect more from Alice Sungurov who is ready
to help you hear her joy in more music to come.

[MUSIC] Adeola Osho

While it is no secret that the UK boasts a bevy
of talented vocalists on the rise, there are some
who startle and surprise from the onset of their
careers. This can definitely be seen in the music
of Adeola Osho. Adeola’s voice is bold and stirring,
with shades of emotion that pull you into whatever
she sings easily. The singer/songwriter creates
compositions that cover all walks of life, most
recently penning a song dedicated to the missing
girls in Nigeria kidnapped by the Boko Haram group.

[MUSIC] Billy Roberts & The Rough Riders

There’s new twists on the traditional music
forms of country and folk music all the time.
But what separates and helps sift the voices
and sounds that will stick from those that don’t
really click is expression. Hailing from Austrailia,
Moree to be exact, Billy Roberts & The Rough
Riders aim to make their musical expression
lock into place right along the heartstrings.
Billy Roberts’ music carries the distinct tonal
quality found in offerings by Neil Young and
Wilco among other folk and rock standouts,
but it’s reinforced by dogged individuality. On
his upcoming album. that individuality has led
him to forgo the lack of creative support for
country music in his home country and to work
with Billy Anderson in Nashville extensively.

That leads us to an album that’s concise but
chock full of easy-going rhythm. Billy’s vocals
throughout convey that succinctly. We see it
drive on ‘Not That Special’, dedicated to a lost
lover with enough twang to accentuate the
rippling guitars. “Be With You” is almost tropical
with the gentle lapping of harmony and crisp
drumwork behind the lyrics. “I Was Young” is
essentially old-school country that gives you
both the grit and swing of a hoe-down. Billy
Roberts & The Rough Riders on this outing do
show their willingness to musically travel their
own path and take you along for the journey.

[MUSIC] The Voices Of Terror - 'Rock-Rap Dynasty'

The inner voice can be a veritable potion comprised
of various moods that can either be settled and flow
with grace or it can be churning and gnawing waiting
to leap forth. With the duo of Mike Walker and Zero,
better known as The Voices of Terror, the latter is the
best way. The band, hailing from Deptford, New Jersey,
joined together in their love of music from an early
age and found their voice within a mashup of hip-hop,
alternative rock and electronica. Such a mashup allowed
the two to get their point across in gritty fashion with
the release of their debut album, Rock-Rap Dynasty.

Rock-Rap Dynasty is part thrashing declaration, and
part showcase of the two’s skills. Walker and Zero
have their distinct styles that at first listen don’t seem
to mesh but click in the midst of the track’s energy.
Influences of artists like Tech-N9ne and Body Count
pepper their lyrics but don’t take away from their
own flavor. ‘Warning’ gives off a certain bounce that
gets you racing as both rappers dissect opponents
like a hunting knife. ‘Save Me’ isn’t an outright plea
for help, it’s a plea to be heard with clarity. And with
‘Insane Lyricist’, both Zero and Walker scrape with
their verses with seriousness. For The Voices Of
Terror, this first album isn’t a bad way to piece
together the beginnings of what they seek in their
album’s name. Check them out at their website
