[MUSIC] Estere w/Oddisee - 'Flash Light'

Photo Credit: Potholes In My Blog

Here’s a jaunty track from an artist on the
rise, Estere. She calls herself ‘just a girl with
an MPC’, but this track proves she’s much, much
more than that. The Wellington, New Zealand
native got a chance to work with hip-hop’s
traveling beatmaker/MC supreme, Oddisee
at a Red Bull Music Academy session. This is
the result. Get into Estere more here

[MUSIC] New Mongrels - 'Raised Incorruptible'

What makes the New Mongrels a band set to
garner genuine curiosity? The reason first begins
with their name. The musical collective is in
fact the latest iteration of a band founded 148
years ago in the Civil War era. ‘The Smythe
County Mongrels Society’ was founded by band
member Haynes Brooke’s great grandfather.
Haynes retraced that history back to the county
courthouse and found the original charter,
prompting the band to return to making music.
Raised Incorruptible is the latest album from
the group since 1998.

The New Mongrels have a unique sound that
shouts Americana but in a fresh way that still
honors rich musical roots. Impressive for a
group that stretches from Decatur, Alabama
to Seattle, Wshington and even neighboring
Vancouver, B.C. Raised Incorruptible is crisp
and sonorous without drifiting into areas that
could bore. ‘Seems’ evokes the tingling melodies
akin to Edie Brickell’s own, with a good back
and forth between guitars led by great vocals.
‘Love It Madly’ is morning calm with gentle
chords framing a terse but lively harmony.
The New Mongrels ably demonstrate that
music by an artisticly inclined committee
can speak to everyone with a gentle voice.
Raised Incorruptible will be out early next
year.

[MUSIC] Heidi Howe - 'Be Good'

Country music is all about how your voice can
convey all kinds of stories for all kinds of people
in the simplest of ways. For Heidi Howe, she’s
been using her voice to convey all kinds of good
feeling for quite some time. Hailing from Lexington,
Kentucky, Howe has been involved with the life
of country music from a very young age thanks
to her concert promoter father. She made a bold
impression at a local NPR concert in 1998 and
built upon that success with her debut album a
year later. ‘The little girl with the big red guitar’
has since produced eight albums and until this
release, released five solo albums. Be Good is
her first since 2007.

The album is cheerful and brisk throughout. Heidi’s
voice dazzles when you first hear it. Each song
finds it wafting like great aromas of cherry pies
fresh out of the oven. ‘Keep Me Crazy’ cascades
over the ears, with choice fiddle work being an
accent to the song’s already pleasant feel. Her
ode to music titans, ‘The Ramones and George
Jones’ is steady but light in its tone. And the title
track does wrap the feeling of the entire album
up in a wholesome way. With a voice like Heidi’s,
it’s not a stretch to say that she will definitely
be a good part of the country music world for
quite some time. Be Good will be released in
February 2014.

[MUSIC] The Plum Magnetic - 'Terra Animata'

There are moments when you need an airy feeling
to envelop your day-to-day mood. You can find it
in various ways, including music. The Plum Magnetic
seek to aid you in that task with their album, Terra
Animata. The group calls New Orleans, Louisiana
home, and it’s apropo for a band that looks to set
new precedents in world/fusion music while still
giving listeners a fresh sound. Their city’s diverse
influence combined with the influences of each
member’s musical prowess(Trent Ciolino and Andrew
McLean met while studying Indian classical music
for example) sparkle throughout the album. You
get this rich sound beginning with ‘Trece Leches’,
a song so mesmerizing you feel a bit of a jolt when
it ends. On ‘SheshBesh’, Indian tabla and bluegrass
swing merrily with each other framed by rising guitar
licks. ‘The Delicious’ is just that; a savory pleasure
that is akin to the same haunting joys found in
melodies by The Robert Cray Band. Terra Animata
is a plush, airy delight for the ears that won’t be
soon overlooked. The album is available now.

[MUSIC] Kelela - "Cut 4 Me"

In the blurry genre that can be electronic music,
the key artists are those whose voices embody
the harmony between the old and the new. In
the case of Maryland born, L.A. artist Kelela, that
voice can rise and fall like a winding breeze. She’s
made an indelible mark with her debut mixtape,
Cut 4 Me, done through the Fade To Mind imprint.
Her voice essentially takes nearly sparse production
and embellishes the entire track to greatness that
conjures up 90’s R&B hotness to go with modern
electronic sensibilities. Take a listen below and
get her mixtape here: http://fadetomind.net/artist/kelela/
