For those who have felt that the Big Apple or any
other city could be a teeming mass of dystopia on
the rise, they may find kindred spirits in Xombie.
The quintet, hailing from New York City, have been
crafting music they term as ‘Hood Metal’ that fits
like a barbed wire glove. And it has been hitting just
as hard since their inception in 2010. From that
point until now, the band has seen their critical
acclaim grow along with their exposure. They’ve
put out two albums and an EP and have graced
the stage opening for acts like Bobaflex, Dope and
Otep. Xombie also made an appearance at the
2013 CBGB Music Festival along other notable
acts like Cappadona of the Wu-Tang Clan. Xombie’s
impact is such that they recently garnered from
their loyal fanbase a Kickstarter campaign amount
of $11,000 and their latest video for ‘Rock Bottom’
features MMA fight icon Kimbo Slice.
Their latest offering, Capital X, is a pulsating
and probing whirlwind. But it doesn’t leave you
at a loss for what the band is trying to convey.
The album’s seven songs are all about rising
above the seemingly insurmountible things that
can make NYC tough on people. ‘Capitol X’
sets the hard-charging tone and finds its
strength in varying guitar riffs and introspective
bars by the lead, Atom Crews. ‘Rotten Apple’
is like the truth of an overturned garbage can
on a street in the Lower East Side that many
walk past; it speaks to how the scene reeks,
but asks you to rage against it rather than be
resigned in thrilling highs and lows thanks to
the battle of the thrashing drums against
snarling chords. ‘Miss Behave’ slows things down
just a little as it explores depression and how
it eats at you. All in all, Xombie’s new album
will make a mark on you that might be a badge
of honor for anyone trying to make it in the
gritty city. Capital X is available now through
their website and Bandcamp page.
