Last Saturday, March 3rd, marked the untimely one-year passing of Adam “MCA” Yauch of the Beastie Boys. In honor of his years of activism and music, Yauch will have a Brooklyn playground named after him.
Beastie Boys member Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond are expected to attend the renaming of Palmetto Playground on Brooklyn’s State Street. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey will be present to show support.
Ad-Rock was initially spear heading the operation to get the NYC Parks Department to rename the State Street Park basketball courts in his name. Fans soon got on board, which gained more exposure on the Brooklyn Heights Blog and Facebook. A press release says Yauch learned to ride a bike at Palmetto Playground. He was also known to hang out there frequently.
Yauch died of throat cancer a year ago at the age of 47. His death happened just weeks after the Beastie Boys were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
