Have you ever wanted to “walk between raindrops?” Random International’s new interactive environment entitled, Rain Room, might just be that for you, and then some. It was already a huge success in 2012, when it made its debut, at The Barbican Centre in London. And now it will make its appearance at The MoMA PS1 exhibition EXPO 1: New York, presented in the lot directly adjacent to The Museum of Modern Art. “The installation recognizes the presence of the viewer,” explains Random International’s Hannes Koch.
A field of falling water pauses wherever a human body is detected, Rain Room offers visitors the experience of controlling the rain. Koch won’t tell you how it works. “We’re being deliberately obscure about the details,” he says, citing a wish to preserve a sense of mystery. But he will say that the installation is full of 3-D cameras, feeding information to the controls in real time. May 12. Be there to experience it for yourself.
